Easily near the top of my personal literary and philosophical canon. Macfarlane is not only a word hoarder but a wordsmith with the intellectual rigor of a Cambridge scholar, adventurous bend of a outdoorsman, and the earthy wisdom of a sage.

While his subject matter here is Britain, his call for place, experiential learning, rooted language, and embodied living will resonate with anybody worn hollow by the placelessness of modern life and the loss of locality and particularity.

He’s up there with Wendell Berry, Paul Kingsnorth, and Nan Shepherd.

There were some great bits, but ultimately this was a bit too UK-centric for my taste, which was probably my bad since I picked this up not knowing this was going to be so.

Reading (listening) to this makes me remember how to be curious and to wonder at things again. What an extraordinary collection of words and landscape, from the Cairngorms to Yosemite. Didn’t find it quite as awesome as Underland, but still something that let me daydream and see nature in a closer, quieter way.

Just didn't work listening to this as an audiobook, probably a great physical book but the constant listed definitions weren't enjoyable unfortunately.
