I liked Harry Potter better than I liked Fablehaven, which I liked better than Percy Jackson, which I liked better than this. Nothing particularly stands out as memorably likable or offensive. It was just a blah book.

It was about halfway before I was really into this book. Out of the two narrators, I probably prefer Sadie. She definitely has her own voice, while Carter is a bit bland. I found the mythology informative, as I know very little of Egyptian mythology. I love Bast, Khufu, and Zia. I found the Set twist a bit predictable, while the Zia twist was more subtle. Desjardins is an annoying, if formidable antagonist. I can only hope that he and the House of Life see reason. I'm actually looking forward to the next book and see what happens next.

Some of my initial thoughts as I got into this book were, "Will he ever write a Norse mythology series?" and "So does this mean that, technically speaking, the Kane siblings and Percy and co. could interact in some huge mish-mash of mythological melding in a future series?" Then once those thoughts were done, I tried to focus purely on this series and the characters within it. I have to say I know little to nothing of Egyptian mythology and history, beyond what I've read in some classes. But Riordan managed to explain things well enough that I knew what was happening as I read, a skill I think he possesses with all of his books.
I love Sadie Kane and I'm fascinated by Anubis and the potential that's sparking between them. I also love the immersion of the Duat and the physical world, and the idea of gods and humans working together to rebuild and reestablish harmony between order and chaos. I'll definitely read the other books in the series, and I suspect I'll grow to love the characters more as I go on.

I loved the Percy Jackson books so I wanted to love this but it just didn't do it for me.
