I don’t have the words to explain how profound an experience reading this book was. All I can do is highly recommend it to everyone I know who reads.

I really loved this memoir! I just found it so insightful, and so accurate in the way it can describe and convey such situations where one can feel so helpless and stuck. I am absolutely in awe of Tara and how she was able to overcome all of these situations by herself, without any support from her family, and came out of it stronger. I really like how she highlighted the turns, and every part of her life that felt like a crossroads to her in her life, leading her to where she is now and her sharing how difficult it was to get there. Tara did a phenomenal job being vulnerable and sharing her story.

rating a memoir is always hard, but it is especially difficult in this case — what can I say except that I was hooked on the story, which is absolutely horrible considering this is her actual life and not just some thriller typa special effects. I'm glad she finally found the courage to stand for herself, yet I can also absolutely understand why she didn't want to or couldn't do it (not that I can relate, I'm so grateful to be privileged in the fact that most of all this sounds like a fever-dreamish nightmare to me).

The repeated use of the n-word from a white author completely takes away from the message of becoming educated. There is no excuse for this.

Such a tough book. So many terrible experiences. Twisted truth. Yet laced with the hope of change.

Did not enjoy, don’t k ow why I pick books like this, they always sound interesting until it gets to the nitty gritty of it - mental illness. I’m not a fan of reading about bipolar or seriously uncontrolled mental illness. It is tragic that so many people have to grow up like this, though, close friends and family included-maybe that’s why I don’t enjoy them, too close to home.

A book I think that anyone struggling while in college would appreciate. Illuminating and tense, beautifully and honestly written.
