Incredibly heavy. Didn't realize what I was getting into when I got to reading it (although I'm sure the summary had hinted to it enough).

My only issue here is the usual issue I have w/ Robin McKinley, which is the long, drawn-out and sometimes winding prose. For some stories, it works really, really well. For Deerskin, while mostly understandable--especially with regard to our heroin's emotional and psychological recovery--it was just too much. I was at the end of my patience.

All in all, true to McKinley's style, although I am not too inclined to go for a second reading.

Started off really slow, but I think all of Robin McKinley books do. It was a bit confusing at times, like did Deerskin know who she was or no? Overall it was decent definetly something different.

I’ve tried reading Robin McKinley, and I have concluded she is too long winded.

This book has some adult themes in it. I first read it as a teenager and, while my mother was surprised, she didn't stop me from reading it. I was just drawn in by Robin McKinley.

I really like McKinley's writing style. This is one of those books I would have loved as a kid; dogs abound, and I will forgive a lot of rather iffy plot bits and confusing end scenes for the chapters of dedication to dogs and companions. I also quite enjoyed the descriptions of wilderness living.

I rated this book three stars based on my enjoyment level only. It was hard to get through , but ultimately rewarding. On a technical level... It's a masterpiece. I marvel at Robin McKinley's mastery of the English language and the way she conveys pain , despair , and healing so flawlessly . The romance IS a little underdeveloped , despite being sweet and good , but this book is not supposed to have romance as the center of the story. At it's heart , it's about how you live after being ruined by someone else and the deep bond that can occur between an animal and a human. There is a rape scene in this novel , but it is very abstract and barely described , albeit powerful and horrifying . I recommend this novel to anyone who appreciates the darker side of fairytales and doesn't mind wordiness.
