Violet has been through a tragic experience of losing her father and sister in a brutal car accident. Her mother has withdrawn from the world, unable to cope with the loss. When the opportunity arises for Violet to attend a rather exclusive girls’ school, she jumps at it. At this point, what has she got to lose?
The Furies opens with a scene of a dead teenage girl, dressed in white and posed on a swing. The authorities never find a cause of death. At this point we are not told who the girl is, or who is recounting the story. But it is a eerie beginning to a story about female friendship, peer pressure, and the volatility of being on the verge of adulthood. Told over the course of one academic year, and barely into the next, The Furies will captivate you with it’s lyrical prose and haunting images.
I was bewitched by this first novel by Katie Lowe. Bewitched being the appropriate term with its themes of witchcraft. The Elm Hollow Academy, set in a coastal town of England, has a long history of witches. The friendship between Vi, Robin, Alex and Grace is a typical one for teenage girls. Four teenage girls who believe they have the power to do anything and the inexperience to try. Add in a secret society and you have the makings of the perfect teenage tale in the tradition of The Heathers or The Craft. I did not want to put this book down. Every character is so well crafted, so well written, that you can almost see them. The story does not disappoint, it is beautiful in its descriptions. I cannot wait for the next novel by Katie Lowe.

This story follows a group of girls at a boarding school. Years before, a girl is found dead sitting on the swings in front of the school in all white, and the mystery is still unsolved years later as girls keep coming back to school. Violet is the new girl and quickly acquiesces to the other students and begins to find her place within the cliques when she gets invited to a secret class/society headed by the mysterious art teacher Annabel. The girls grapple with school and their social lives while becoming entangled in the old stories of witches and burnings on the school grounds and an ugly past full of death and summoning otherworldly beings hidden there. Out of desperation or perhaps needs, the girls find themselves in some very horrendous situations and act in equally evil ways.
After I finished this book I sat with it for a few days in hopes of digesting it a little more and not giving it such a low rating, because I really hate doing that. I won't say that I didn't like this book, but it just was not my favorite and I don't think what it was compared to really worked for me. I had much higher expectations. But! I did like it; there were some parts of this book that I really really enjoyed, such as the huge twist at the end (the hair)!
Overall, this book is well written and the language is fine. The dialogue feels realistic and fits a group of teenage girls at a boarding school. For me, one of the largest issues is the unrealistic feel of the story overall, specifically how the girls act and the things they get away with. Maybe it is because I wasn't a wild teenager so I don't know how these sorts of things happen, but I feel like this girls get away with and get into so many things that don't feel real. I have a hard time believing that they can run around their town all night and go to these wild parties at the college, sneak past security guards, and use recreational drugs so profusely (also, who the heck is affording this stuff?). I don't want to give too much away here, but how did NO ONE see these girls entering or leaving houses, especially after crimes and murder occurred? I feel like this town since it did have an ugly unsolved murder and others afterward, would be more on guard about suspicious activity and those sorts of things would be watched for and repeated.
Here's the flaw in my issue and I fully recognize it: these girls were able to do what they did and get away with everything because of their belief in and use of the supernatural. Perhaps this is the reason literally everything seems possible for these girls. Who knows?
I will say that I love the twists in the story at the end and they really help to round this story out and make it worth the while. If you read this, you will get there and totally understand what I'm saying.
I really appreciated how this story dotes on the power of females, especially when they come together against enemies or those who have mistreated them. It really speaks to the power of females and bonds that are created. There is a pretty strong vein of female-power all throughout this story, as it deals with a boarding school, a clique of girls and their friendship, an all-female secret society, The Erinyes (3 badass goddesses AKA The Furies who would seek vengeance upon men and punish them for their crimes), and witches. So yeah, pretty powerful women.
Overall, this book was not a bad one to read but it just wasn't what I wanted and didn't really sit too well with me in the end. It felt like some of it was really rushed and unrealistic while other parts just seemed to lag. The ending wrapped up really really quickly and altought it did have some pretty interesting plot twists, it was super quick. I would have rather the entire book have that same quick feeling or the ending be drawn out a bit more. Other than that, this was an interesting story.

A fabulously dark and toxic tale. It featured in my May Book Hooked Box.

I was browsing NetGallery and the synopsis and title stuck out to me and I decided why not? I thought it sounded similar to books written by Gillian Flynn or Megan Abbott. And in a way it was like those books, just not that memorable.
We follow Violet, a teenager who ends up on a scholarship at a private all girls academy. She ends up joining 'The Furies' a secret society of sorts where young women use spells and witchcraft for vengeance. Whether or not there is magic or witchcraft is left up to reader's interpretation. Murders quickly start happening, and there is a few red herrings about who the girl in white is that is mentioned in the beginning.
The story is more boring than I expected and was predictable. The two other girls, Robin and Grace, are not that important at all and for that matter neither is the art teacher Annabel. Alex and Violet are the more interesting characters but again it's been done before and better. If you want a fast read about a female cast then check it out. I received a copy of this book for my honest review by NetGallry.
