This collection was a little underwhelming, I’m sorry to say. While it is technically billed as “new adult horror,” it is promoted like splatterpunk erotica, and I thought that was a fun, deviant, disruptive genre mash-up that would be great for short stories and novellas. Splatterpunk is known to be gory, graphic, over-the-top, inappropriate, and beyond any sense of decency or good taste, and any erotica that comes in contact with that would share those sensibilities. That’s not a genre or style that appeals for everyone, certainly, but that’s what is being sold on the outside of the tin… and it isn’t what I found inside, of the eight stories (five shorts and three novellas), only one felt like it lived in the same area code as that description. Two others were maybe in nearby districts. But the rest, while there were some devious and dark ideas, and occasional, very brief, instances of graphic sexuality, nothing that came close to the shock and awe promised. If the stories were really compelling and interesting I wouldn’t be as let down by the lack of extremity, but in the end I didn’t feel particularly moved or excited by them. None were bad, some flirted with interesting ideas, and across the eight a few different genre ideas are played with. They don’t all feel the same, and any given story was able to hold my attention, but they just didn’t do much for me. The collection is short and you can read it in a sitting, and so maybe if you’re interested in dipping your toes in splatterpunk-adjacent stories you will find something to enjoy here.

I want to thank the authors, the publisher Blood Bound Books, and NetGalley, who provided a complimentary eARC for review. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don‘t even know where to begin with this book. It was so vastly different from anything that I have ever read. It‘s so f*cked up and weird but I loved it! Think black mirror meets smut meets weird kinky horror. This is definitely not one for those of you who are not used to reading books with a TON
of trigger warnings. It is FILLED with them. It is erotic horror at it‘s finest and I will be exploring this genre more now!

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

I started this earlier this month - read 1.5 stories and felt no desire to pick it back up. the first two stories relied too much on sex and had essentially no plot. that is just not for me and I don’t feel the need to continue

I loved this collection, the balance between horror and erotica is excellent, and the writing is smooth and easy to read.

The stories are compelling and surprisingly fun for such dark subjects, some are a bit gross, and a bit bizarre, but that is why I loved them.

These authors remind me a bit of Poppy Z Brite, because I can never predict where the stories are going, I love that unpredictable feel I get from them.

I have read a few books by both of these authors now, and I’m at the point where anything they put out automatically go’s onto my to read list.

Thank you Joe Spagnola, S.C. Mendes and Blood Bound Books for the opportunity to read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What. A. Doozy! Nikki Noir and SC Mendes are brilliant minds! I’ve never read anything quite like these stories here in this little book. Petite mort is filled with 8 incredible short stories and novellas. They are gruesome, out of this world, and disgusting in all the right ways. I even found myself snickering at times. If you want quick reads and amazing story telling, pick this one up and take it for a spin!

Incredibly fun and chilling!
If you like Tales from the Crypt you will enjoy this anthology.
The stories were very strong and didn't leave loose ends. Many times I could not sleep because I HAD to finish the story. Truly if you like your horror sexy with humor, you will have a good time reading this.
This book could be triggering for some, so please check your trigger warnings, especially those relating to sexual violence.
