Definitely enjoyed this more than the first. I think it was due to the (re?) introduction of characters and the building of relationships between existing characters. The plot was still all over the place but fun book nonetheless.

I normally enjoy Carriger but this book was ridiculous. Drawn out and inane. The last couple of chapters picked up a bit and the supporting characters were great. Otherwise, not good at all.

I love Gail Cariger and this world. I really enjoy the exploration of this world and the way that she's delving into the less than pleasant parts of British Imperialism.
The romance was sweet and lovely. I always love her couples though, so that was a given. But Rue and Quensel were wonderful. I really liked their "lessons" and how it was built up and very much about pleasure for the both of them.
Why four stars? Well there was some slightly iffy moments. Really just moments -- like a random slur from the protagonist that could have easily been avoided (it even sounded wrong for the period -- while I know Romani peoples were around, the referencing of their culture in regards to getting ripped off stood out as odd) or misgendering a gender fluid character (transgender? It was unclear). I couldn't tell if they were editing slips or something more insidious and it bothered me. Enough that I'm knocking a star off my review even though overall I loved this book.

Imprudence didn't really blow my mind. It had the usual quirky characters and interesting alternate history setting, like the rest of the books in this series, but... It could have been much better. Especially if half the book was not devoted to romantic developments between Prudence and Quesnel.
I expected more steampunk and less PNR from this series.

There is nothing resembling literature to be found on her pages, but there is so much fun! And not a little risky business presented in such clean terms that they are even more titillating than they would be if presented as R-rated dialogue!
I classify these as Steampunk-lite. You don't get chemistry or engineering lessons, but Carriger throws in enough that smacks of reality that you can almost imagine Rue's Spotted Custard soaring the world in the same way it's described in the book. You don't need to be convinced of it's possibility anymore than you need to be convinced that Vampires, Soulless and Weres live among us. They exist in the book(s) so it works.
Carriger has a knack for creating prickly characters that you can't help but fall in love with. She always presents us with an ensemble cast so that someone will appeal to you regardless of what you like. Someone else will irritate you, but how do you know light without having darkness to compare it to? :)
I gobble up these books as quick as I can and I read somewhere she was taking a break. Too bad, because I wish I had another at hand. I'm on the mood for her special fun.
