I honestly wanted to like this book but couldn't. The characters were so lacking - I felt little emotional connection - even to the poor rape/murder victim. Highly overrated book IMO.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was very melancholic in mood, which I usually enjoy, but I found it made the book boring at times. I need a bit of variety in mood sometimes to keep interested and curious. The book is definitely beautifully written and has a rich plot. But on the other hand, my pickiness when it comes to character development is a bit disappointed. Granted, Susie, the narrator is dead (can she develop as a person if she’s no longer living?), but I found the other characters bland as well. I can’t help but feel that Susie is the least developed character, which is odd for a main character—but, as I said, she’s dead so I can kind of see how that could be.
I don’t think I would explicitly recommend this book, but if someone told me they were thinking about reading it, I would tell them they should. Its concepts and story are interesting, despite being bland for my personal tastes.
