Reread this, it's still incredible. I don't think I have the words to describe it. The journey it goes on, the changes Nancy undergoes, the insight into such a specific historic lesbian community. I just love it so so much.

sex scenes were a bit much for me personally, but the book was well-written!

"But there was something very appealing about that Fe-Male. I saw myself in it - in the hyphen."

From start to finish it was just... a marvel. Rarely have I read a book where the protagonist made me feel so seen and understood. Character relatability aside, the way the book explores hurtful relationships and gender identity is something deeply personal I've never found in a book before? I think I had an existential crisis like four separate times reading this. Earnestly I needed this book, a strange feeling I didn't know I could have. I will be thinking about hyphens and oyster halves and canaries in cages for ages...
