I usually have a difficult time rating novellas since they have much less time to develop the world and the characters have less time to grow. This was not the case with The Emperor's Soul. Hands down the best novella I've read ever. Shai is a strong, smart character that inspires being honest with yourself and stresses the value of recognizing other people's motivations and feelings. Truly, it was a pleasure to read.

Wow, this story blew me away. After getting used to each of Sanderson's works needing 25+ hours to tell a dramatic tale, this tale does it all and more in just under 4 hours. The introspection, analysis of self and the journey of life and lives is so dense, so powerful and so very moving in this short story of a master forger given an impossible task.

"True art was more than beauty; it was more than technique. It was not just imitation. It was boldness, it was contrast, it was subtlety."

Excellent

This was a re-read, as I try to get more familiar with the Cosmere and not just individual stories. This is definitely my favorite of the shorts, and high on the list of overall works!

"There was rarely an obvious branching point in a person’s life. People changed slowly, over time. You didn’t take one step, then find yourself in a completely new location. You first took a little step off a path to avoid some rocks. For a while, you walked alongside the path, but then you wandered out a little way to step on softer soil. Then you stopped paying attention as you drifted farther and farther away. Finally, you found yourself in the wrong city, wondering why the signs on the roadway hadn’t led you better."
