A cosy murder mystery with a duke and a spinster. Found the language a bit convoluted, but really enjoyed the main characters inner dialogue. Satisfying wrap up to the investigation

3.5 stars, fun cozy mystery! I'm not sure why I was expecting more romance but that definitely isn't the main event here. I also didn't get the dynamic of her continuing to be called plain but at the same time the most handsome duke ever seems drawn to her. Is she actually plain or not haha There is no resolution to their relationship in this book. I didn't feel compelled to read the next book but I can imagine myself returning to the series if I need something light.

It’s like Gilmore Girls and Pride and Prejudice and Only Murders in the Building had a regency cozy mystery baby. I laughed out loud repeatedly and I never do that with books

I love this book so much. The mystery is interesting and there are some nice twists and turns. The character of Beatrice is a really nice one to have as a heroine, as we begin to see her go from being quiet and reserved to beginning to stand up for herself. Plus, the book is genuinely funny in parts. The author has a lovely turn of phrase - some of the lines in it made me giggle out loud.
I also love the romantic aspect to the story. It's less overt in this first book, because they've only just met, but their interactions are sparkling and entertaining to read. Kesgrave, like Beatrice, begins the story as one thing - a stuffy duke - but becomes something softer as the story goes on and Beatrice gets to know him.
Overall, the book is well-written, humorous, and easy to read, with engaging characters and a decently plotted mystery, and sets up the rest of the novels in the series perfectly.
