Keneally tells Oskar Schindler's story in a blend between biography and fiction which works really well. You can get lost in the story without ever losing sight of the fact that the story is true.
The actual story of Schindler does feel almost unbelievable and I was constantly struck by how incredibly young and desperately brave they all were. The horrors of the Holocaust are a constant presence throughout the book and you can feel a sense the way the ominous threat lingered at all times for Jews in Nazi occupied territories. It seems almost implausible that so many of them were able to survive, and yet they did.
I think it is really a lesson on the complexities of what it means to be human and how there is always good and compassion amongst evil and that even the 'heroes' of history were themselves deeply flawed.

Soooo boring! It's intended as historical fiction, but it reads as a (very boring) non fiction history book. Absolutely could not get into it.
I do intend to watch the movie, which I've been putting off for the longest time because I wanted to read the book first... I regret that decision now!
