I read this for class and this class is becoming one of my favorites. This is a beginner's guide to understanding queerness and sexuality. You learn about different theorists, assumptions, the queer community, and a look at queerness overtime. The drawings within the novel add so much to the content and give context to what is being discussed.

I am going to try to ask, what does this open up and what does this close down instead of us that good or bad? After reading this book. Really liked it!

Vaikka teos voisi vaikuttaa pikaisesti selaamalla helpolta, menee se asiassaan erittäin syvälle filosofisiin ja vaikeisiin akateemisiin teorioihin. Kuvitus tekee lukemisesta osin helppoa ja paikoin vaikeaa. Silti queer-teoriasta pintapuolista syvemmälle sisältöä etsivälle sopiva teos.

Okay, so I DNF’d this one which is something I’ve only done once before. I will say I wasn't very far into reading when I made this choice. This review is quite negative towards the book which is usually something I don’t do, so if that’s not what you want to read, turn away now. One of the first turn-offs was that this book is more about queer theory rather than queer history as the title leads us to believe. It is very complex with its wording and it just felt like noise when I was trying to read. I think maybe someone who has studied queer theory may enjoy this one more than me but this doesn't feel like a book for beginners at all. Besides that, I didn’t like the fact they included the n-word when talking about slurs. The book uses the n-word as an example of slurs and groups it with a bunch of slurs used against the queer community. I feel like the two things cannot be compared as there's just so much harm with the n-word. Also in case you were wondering the word was written out in its entirety, and after reading some reviews, I learned that both of the authors are white and I feel like this was not their place to do this. Having the word included did not at all add to the book or its context and simply just seemed like two white people wanted to get away with using the n-word! Also, this book seemed more like a book with pictures rather than a graphic novel. Overall this book was just not for me and that's really unfortunate because I had been wanting to read it for a while, assuming it was a graphic history of the word queer and queer icons as it led me to believe, and it's just simply not that!

I have learned more Queer history and theory reading this book than in 40+ years. This definitely falls under the banner of the type of book that would have been useful to me as a wee queer growing up.

However, it wasn't quite the book I was expecting - it was MUCH heavier, much more in depth than I expected from a graphic novel. And for me personally I don't feel the style of the book worked for the subject matter.
