5 stars.......really?? I LOVED these books when I was in junior high. My mom let me read whatever I wanted when I was younger as long as I was reading. Actually, she read them as well and loved them. I think she still reads V.C. Andrews. I admit I gave them up sometime in high school. They do bring back memories, though!

How do you even give a star rating to this? It was even more bonkers than I remembered from reading it as a teen! (But you know, also ruler readable and I want to continue with the series!)

Really, really bizarre. I can't believe my mother let me read this at that age.

Nothing like an old school gothic horror cult classic to make you question your reading choices! The horror comes from taboo snd uncomfortable subjects; child abuse, rape, incest, religious extremism, and parental neglect. This book tugs at your heart but also makes you question why you picked it up in the first place.

Written from the perspective of the eldest daughter in the family, it showcases children left having to deal with adult problems and quandaries about the world, such as figuring out love, desire, puberty, family, trust, and hate.

The author must have been a fan of Sigmund Freud to write something like this. Y’all who read it as kids/young adults, are you okay????

Scandalous and excellent. When your brain needs a break and you want to read something suspenseful and a little trashy, this book is excellent. The sequels get worse with each one. Book 2 was ok, book 3 was downright awful.

Mind the content warnings!!!

I couldn't put this book down. I needed to know what happened. It is not because of scandalous intrique (see the content warnings as soon as you Google it) but because the author did a great job making the characters seem so real. This book is told through the perspective of one of four children locked in a wing of their grandparents house for a long time through odd circumstances. Yes, it has a lot of wild hooks, but I think the point of this horror story is to show how witches and villains from fairy tales can exist in our world, and for trivial reasons. The book also bears a big warning for how religious zealotry and trauma can mess up a family for generations to come.
