The initial premise is really intriguing -- an ancient virus is unleashed on today humans by the melting permafrost, as a young woman cast out of a cult rejoins society just as its falling apart due to the resulting pandemic. The plotting was tight and the writing crisp for the first half or so, but then lost steam for me as the thriller aspect of the story takes a back seat to a budding romance that just wasn't as interesting as what was happening around the characters.

A great book, bit the last chapter tried to wrap things up too nicely. A girl is raised in a cult and is cast out at 21. Her sister and niece are still in the cult. She moves in with an old friend of the family and suddenly a flu that comes from an ancient caribou who becomes unfrozen in the permafrost. People start dying from going crazy. The world starts breaking down. The main character discovers from her sister that the head of the cult actually may have sold the ancient flu and helped spread it. Wynter tries to get proof of this across the country to a vet who studies infectious disease. Along the way she finds a man who built an underground silo for the end of the world. After she gets the samples to the vet, they create a vaccine. Wynter takes it to her niece and kills the head of the cult and frees her niece. She goes back to the silo with her new boyfriend who she met in her cross country trip. The end has her in sort of a happily ever after with her niece, the friend of the family and her boyfriend living underground for 6 months. A good story though and I can't wait to see what happens.

Wild ride that did have me gripped most of the time! A couple vague areas that I would love cleared up but overall- cults and diseases in one book will be satisfying for me

Lee takes readers on a disturbing journey with 22-year-old Wynter, who has spent most of her life in a cult with her sister and is fearful after her banishment into the world, where the predictions of the charismatic cult leader seem to be coming true. Wynter’s conflicting emotions work against her knowledge of what she must do to save her surviving family, and the edge-of-your seat revelations shock readers just as they do Wynter. Compelling and unsettling, this story maintains a thread of hope, reminding readers that God is present even when it doesn’t seem so.

This book is riveting - from early on I was hooked! It takes you on quite the ride - full of excitement and anticipation. What really was crazy is that it mimics so much of our current Coronavirus Pandemic! As well as the cult that our main character is a part of. That is not only interesting, but also insightful of how people feel who are living as part of these types of groups. Great read - and now I’m ready for the next one in the series!
