The boom starts a bit slow and I struggled at first to get the pace, however, once I adjusted to it I found it really enjoyable, different characters narrate, there's also articles that narrate a bit of the story, the fact that is narrated in different ways gives you more insight into the story.
I really enjoyed the story, Ruth's and idgie's sorry is beautiful, I would've like to see it have more depth, if feels like we only know the surface of the story, but I guess that's what the author intended.
I see a lot of complaints about how African Americans are portrayed and the words used to describe them, and I am in no way excusing the author, but it was published in the 90's, there was not the consciousness there is now, we cannot expect this book to be written as if it was written en inte 2020's racism was even so latent in the 2000's. So, even thought I do not like entirely how they were portrayed and sometimes described, I understand, and I loved all the African American characters, they gave them all different personalities, and their stories are so powerful, it's a book that I really enjoyed, with characters I really loved.
My only complaint would be Evelyn, that's why 4.5 stars, just another main character traumatized by her weight, same old same old, but overall I would really recommend this book.

Takes awhile to get into it, but is a fun lighthearted read with some mystery, romance, and badass women and black characters.

This is my favourite book; I’ve read it at least a couple dozen times and I cry every. single. time. Strong women and sisterhood are major themes in this book, but it also touches on civil rights, and there is a lesbian romance although it is never explicitly stated as such. Evelyn, Ruth, Idgie, & Ninny feel like old friends at this point. Always find myself coming back to read it yet again whenever I come upon life’s many difficulties. Reading it just feels like no matter what happens, everything is going to be ok.

I used CAWPILE (characters, atmosphere, writing, plot, intrigue, logic, and enjoyment) by Bookroast to get the star rating. This book is well written and it did make me nostalgic for simpler times. However, I cringed at the racism. It does jump around and that can be pretty confusing. But I've seen the movie so many times that it didn't bother me.
