What can I say? This was the best book of the series so far. Don't get me wrong, white authors featuring Japanese cultures prominently in their stories will never not be at least an orange flag. But while I'm sure the characters played into some East Asian stereotypes, I found most of the main characters to be reasonably well-developed. As always,
Spoiler I found Scott Westerfeld's depiction of romance to be stiff and manufactured. I did like Aya's character, but Westerfeld seems to gloss over exactly why Frizz Mizuno took such an instant liking to her. Aya became emotionally invested in him after their first meeting and the rest is history; their relationship arc took a linear and altogether bland path.
With that said, this final installment of the main Uglies series embraced some classic sci-fi roots.
Spoiler Big Brother-esque technology, a dysfunctional social merits system, anti-industrialism, physiologic and brain modifications, mathed-out global destruction, and space travel all had well-deserved stage time.
I'm sure they'd complain throughout, but even classic genre die-hards could get something out of this book.
Will I ever stop cringing over this story's ill-fitting, American-made Japanese costume? Naur. But I enjoyed it (against my will) nonetheless.
