Absolutely stunning prose. I enjoyed this even when it became a little slow. Beautiful descriptions and character details. The plot starts to wain toward the end, with a few lose ends and questions which could very well be answered in the sequel.

⭐Thank you, Hachette Aus, for the beautiful ARC copy!⭐

This was my first book from Kiran, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It was a nice, quick read, one that was well paced and sprinkled with magic, and the world building wasn’t too heavy that it would scare away younger readers. The characters are written well, and I found myself connecting to them. I especially loved the animal companions, and the bonds they shared with their humans.

Ysolda was a likable main character. It was refreshing to witness her flaws (fear of confrontation and queasiness over blood), but she was still brave despite her young age. There were many times that I forgot that she was 13. She emanated maturity much beyond her years.

I'm excited to watch how Seren and her daughter will interact; I believe it'll be interesting. I'm all for the tension! I loved Seren in several situations, despite her portrayal as a villain. A well written character who is selfless, but also selfish. A double edged heart.

This has set itself up to be a wonderful series, and I will be picking up the next book. I’m keen to see where the story leads.

The Shadow of the Wolf Queen by Kiran Millwood Hargrave has created a vivid fantasy world that’ll draw you in even with its later upcoming novels. The worldbuilding is exciting and detailed, and the story is well-paced.

This is the story of Ysalda; she lives with her sister Hari in Glaw Wood. One day, there is a terrible shaking, and Ysalda's house falls to the ground, and her sister goes missing. Ysalda follows the riders who have taken Hari in the hopes of getting her back, but she is caught by them and taken to see Seren, the Wolf Queen. The Queen enlists Ysalda's help to find an ancient forest, hoping they can meet someone who can help them save the world.

Hargrave’s novels are always enchanting and grab your attention. The protagonist’s connection to the natural world is essential to the book’s concept, as Hargrave uses rich, imaginative images to create a realistic, magical world for her readers. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this trilogy.
