MM Hockey Romance

DNF @ 37%

This book is soooo boring and odd like these two have a one night stand and when Adam tries to find Tenny after, Tenny will only text him because he doesn’t want Adam to see him in the light of day. Tenny thinks he’s ugly and that Adam won’t want him. So they have this weird texting friendship but then Adam gets a concussion and Tenny finds out that Adam put him down as an emergency contact. WTF.

Then Tenny nurses him back to health, helps him shower, shit and eat for 3 days. Intimately, helps a guy he’s only met in person once but has been texting with for a few months. Isn’t that a bit odd? I’ve been married almost 8 years and while I love my husband, him helping me shit, shower and eat would be hell so to do it with someone you just met?

Adam and etienne

"No one notices me. No one flirts with me. No one goes out of their way to make me smile. I go through life and I scratch and claw and bleed for what I do and that’s okay, I’m okay with that because that is life. I’m invisible.”

  • etienne thinking he's ugly is actually so sad
  • Adam having concussion, being in hospital, he had etienne as his emergency contact so he rushed there to see if he's alright. Adam was just saying he wanted et over and over again. Adam told him how he saw a butterfly that was the same colour as his eyes :( Adam said the butterfly was pretty like him
  • et taking care of him for 3 days was cute
  • okay but tell me why I actually cried when etienne was showing Adam all the hate comments he gets calling him ugly
  • etinennes dad being so nasty to him about his looks was heartbreaking
  • THEYRE PLAYING ON THE SAME TEAM NOW
  • Adam got hit again and he's blind ....

Loved this book!

Etienne pulled me into this book so quickly and never let go. His feelings and emotions and self-worth absolutely broke my heart throughout the entire book. It took Adam being the strong one to pull Etienne out of his slump and into a loving and strong relationship. Etienne in return pulled Adam through his down time and proved that love conquers all.

This is the third Grey book that I read, and unlike most of the other reviews that I am seeing on Goodreads, I actually think of her hockey romances this is her strongest one so far (still have to read two more of her published ones), and this also serves as the "first" in her loosely connected novels. This focuses on Adam and Etinne, two hockey players that splitting time between the major and minor leagues of hockey (I still have to learn the various leagues and the role that the teams play with rosters) but suffice to say Adam is having his moment while Etiene feels lucky to play as his talent develops.

I think what I really enjoyed about this book is that for a hockey romance, we also take a subdive into the male gaze, and how beauty standards for men about themselves and how others seem them also play a role into how that affects their self esteem. I haven't read that from a male perspective before, and thought it was an interesting shift in how hockey romances are usually formulaic in how the characters present themselves, or even how the characters interact.

The angst was also there and in full swing, and that made for an even more enjoyable read for me.
