Where Futures End by Parker Peevyhouse

I read the hardback from the library, not the Kindle edition. I don't know why it says that.

I had a great time with this book. It's a mix of dystopian sci fi and mythical fantasy, told in five vignettes over the course of 100 years. Each vignette features a different cast of characters but everyone is vividly drawn and it's easy to engage with each person and time period. The mix of machines and magic blurs the scifi/fantasy genre line in really cool ways, and after the first chapter, the necessary YA angst doesn't feel intrusive to the narrative.

I have mixed feelings over the early references to famous sci fi films. On one hand, it sets up our first vignette as now, and it makes it easier to envision the future worlds of the subsequent chapters. On the other hand, it set me up to make comparisons throughout the book (oh, this is like Feed, this is from Ready Player One, this is A.I. Artificial Intelligence) which I think takes away from some of the excitement of discovery. It felt a little like touring Greatest Hits of Sci Fi instead of exploring unknown horizons for myself. That said, everything is a remix and this mix is a lot of fun. Would definitely recommend.

7.28.20 update: rating changed to 1.5/5. I dislike this book but don't have particularly strong feelings toward it.

Edit 3-31: Lowered to 2/5, Probs 5.5/10.

I have to say, I wasn't impressed by this book. Here's the long and short of it:

The writing was good. The book was creative, and even interesting at times. However, I felt almost no investment in this book. The author was trying to weave together this mystery that gets revealed in the end. What I think she ended up with is a book that stays at surface level- constantly. Never going any deeper than that, and therefore never getting me fully invested. And the ultimate reveal? Pretty much the same. Interesting, but elicited an "oh, ok so that's what's up" response from me, versus being some mind-blowing thing. And overall, I didn't think that the book was that much of a "puzzle" anyway. I had a pretty good sense of what was going on throughout, and unless I missed some complex way that different storylines connected, everything seemed pretty straight-forward.

Overall, this isn't a bad book, and is at times very interesting and creative. But overall, I thought it was pretty meh.

At the expense of sounding rude, this book was absurd. Not in a good way.

A good concept, buy terrible execution. The five teens' stories do not connect at all. Only the first and last kinda "meet".

Above all, i hate (sorry) stupid angsty teens saying stupid angsty stuff and doing stupid angsty stuff to further the plot. None of the them even had a semblance of realistic characteristics.

For example,
"hearing Cole’s voice was like waking up slowly and listening to someone tell you where you are"

What does this even mean??

Overall, not my cup of tea.

This was an interesting book - a series of related stories that lead us further and further into the future, as a parallel universe begins to have more and more effects on life on earth.

The book never really got going. I felt like it was intended to be an allegory, but it never taught anything or moved me.

A bizarre but really cool combination.
