Liked it, but reads more like a thesis than a novel.
Christopher Tolkien takes us through the different iterations that Tolkien wrote about the tale of Beren and Luthien.

I am a huge, huge fan of Professor Tolkien's masterpiece, and I jumped at the chance to read about the different drafts and ideas he had for the romance that helped make characters like Elrond, Aragorn, and Arwen possible. The tale of Beren and Lúthien is a beautiful story, and I loved seeing how it developed over time. A beautiful work.

Was disappointed to find out that the majority of this book is just commentary about the story and it's various works. I read the story and the epic poem, but skimmed through all the commentary and history-related works.

Beautiful love story set in the First Age of Middle Earth. Always love reading the stories from this age and thoroughly enjoy Christopher's compilations of his father's work. This book tell's the original story plus bits and pieces and the poetical parts written over a span of many years. The story itself is a beautiful and tragic tale of the love story between Beren and Luthien

A fascinating look into one of the more important stories in the lore of Middle-Earth. Christopher Tolkien does a remarkable job of analyzing the trajectory of his father's work yet is able to take a step back and allow the tale to unfold naturally. While some may take exception to the fact that the book is really just a collection of different forms of the same story, I believe this only reinforces Tolkien's appreciation for the epic tradition and the opportunity for reinterpretation without sacrificing greater narrative or thematic structures. A perfect, quick read for Tolkien fans, language enthusiasts, or someone looking for some classic high-romance
