This book has exceeded my expectations. This is exactly what I want when I read YA. Tatsumi is such a simp and Yumeko is the cutest cinnamon roll. The slowburn is killing me, tho.

Friends, this was just not my thing.
For one, Shadow of the Fox was extremely episodic, which is not something I generally love. For another, I never felt particularly engaged with the story. This could definitely have been more to do with me and my mood today than the book itself, but I was just never that invested.
I liked the ideas behind it, but I wished they'd been explored a little more. Yumeko's kitsune powers were very interesting, but we barely get to see her use them because she spends most of the book hiding her true identity from her companions. While our two narrators were interesting enough, I never really felt like the other characters were very fleshed out. I never understood the motivations of our main villain, and I grew tired of Yumeko's main character trait (trusting to the point of naivete). The idea that she could blindly trust everyone she comes across and have that trust work out for her in nearly every case seemed pretty unrealistic to me.
All in all, just not my thing.

This was fun. A found family band of misfits, a quest, and plenty of evil. A first for me based on Japanese mythology

Heerlijk verhaal vol actie en spanning gesitueerd in een oosterse setting, met demonen uit de onderwereld, goede en kwade geesten, magiërs, verschillende soorten yokai (wezens met bovennatuurlijke krachten), goden en andere figuren uit de Japanse mythologie.
Hoofdpersonen zijn:
■ de 16-jarige Yumeko, een half-kitsune (vos-yokai), als pasgeborene te vondeling gelegd bij de Tempel van de Fluisterwinden en daar geïsoleerd opgegroeid/opgevoed door de monniken, en
■ Tatsumi, een 17/18-jarige shinobi (ninja) van de Kage clan, drager van het zwaard Kamigoroshi - Godendoder - waarin de ziel van de afschrikwekkende en bloeddorstige demon Hakaimono is opgesloten
De hoofdstukken zijn afwisselend vanuit het perspectief van Yumeko en Tatsumi in de eerste persoon geschreven.
Als de tempel waar Yumeko wordt aangevallen door demonen uit de onderwereld en in brand wordt gestoken, krijgt Yumeko als laatste opdracht van haar leermeester Isao opdracht het deel van een belangrijke perkamentrol dat in die tempel bewaard werd, met haar leven te beschermen en weg te brengen naar een andere tempel, waar het tweede deel van de perkamentrol wordt beschermd en bewaakt: de Tempel van de Stalen Veer.
Tatsumi is tijdens zijn opleiding tot shinobi getraind om al zijn emoties te onderdrukken:
"Er mocht geen angst zijn, geen twijfel, geen woede of spijt. Niets waarmee Hakaimono greep kon krijgen op mijn gedachten. Als ik ook maar iets voelde, als ik ook maar één emotie toestond, zou de demon het overnemen en zou ik mezelf verliezen in zijn woede en bloeddorst. Ik was slechts een wapen voor de Schaduwclan"
Hij is er door zijn daimyo (clanleidster) vrouwe Hanshou op uit gestuurd om het stuk perkamentrol dat in de Tempel van de Fluisterwinden werd bewaard, te bemachtigen. Maar tegen de tijd dat hij de tempel nadert, blijkt deze in brand te staan en ontmoet hij Yumeko, die de tempel is ontvlucht en hem vertelt dat de demonen alle monniken hebben gedood maar de rol niet in handen hebben gekregen omdat Meester Isao, voorbereid op een aanval, die tijdig naar de andere tempel zou hebben gezonden. Ze zegt alleen dat zij de monniken van de andere tempel moet waarschuwen dat ook zij een aanval kunnen verwachten, maar houdt angstvallig voor Tatsumi geheim dat zij de rol in haar bezit heeft.
Omdat Tatsumi de rol moet zien te bemachtigen en de locatie van de andere tempel onbekend is, besluit hij Yumeko op haar reis te vergezellen. En zo gaan de wereldvreemde maar warmhartige Yumeko en de emotieloze Tatsumi op weg...

Enjoyed this story in particular a few interesting female characters including the antagonists. Liked the playfulness & gentleness & kindness contrasted with the samurai.

Shadow of the Fox is the second book series that I've read which delves into the lush and vast world of Japanese folklore. Moreover, I have read numerous manga (Japanese graphic novels) that involves this particular subject. But no matter how many times I've read it, it still manages to amaze me. Every time.
This book encompasses different folklore and myths that even though it is not the first time that I've heard about these, it still fascinates me like a small child would a new, sparkling toy.
The book has a half-kitsune (demon fox), a demon-slaying shinobi (ninja), a ronin (disgraced samurai or swordsman), a noble swordsman, a shrine maiden for a team and although they seem mismatched, it makes their interactions all the more interesting.
It is filled with action, comedy, suspense, horror, budding romance, which left me at the edge of my seat while reading it well past my bedtime.
A definite must-read if you love Japanese folklore as much as I do, or if you are just plain interested. I assure you that you won't be disappointed.
