The story wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped, but I still enjoyed it. I hope Zuko comes to his senses.

This review is for the story as a whole, not each part, since I read all three parts back to back.

I recently rewatched the series, and, as I'm sure every other ATLA fan will tell you, this is the perfect way to continue the story. It picks up almost immediately after the series ends, and it carries on with the aftermath of a war that lasted a hundred years.

The heart of this story, to me, was Zuko his new responsibility as the Fire Lord of a nation whose conquest is residing. He must question himself, and ask if he is doing the right think, by his nation, citizens and his friends. Like always, I give Avatar the Last Airbender way more credit people would think. The themes that this tackles are complex and I'm glad to see that the comics continues to treat issues like colonization and national identity in a ways that don't simplify them and do these themes justice.

The art style itself is cute. Is a little more rounded than that of the original series, but I really liked it. It was nice to see the characters be a bit older, especially Aang.

*This book is part of my personal reading challenge for the summer 2021, #MHA30for30challenge. The goal is for me to read thirty books from my Kindle so that I can reward myself and buy the thirty volumes of the My Hero Academia manga series that are out so far, to my knowledge.

(Read Sept 7, 2016. Not dated so as not to count for goodreads yearly challenge.)

I am really enjoying the adventures of Aang and his friends after the show. Book 2 was definitely better than book 1, but that is to be expected as the artists and the writer get used to the characters. This book primarily focused on Toph and Sokka. Gene Yang did a good job of showing the camaraderie of the two characters (starts off strong on page 1 and holds until the end).

Aang and Katara are sickeningly sweet together. The part that featured the Aang Fan Club was touching.

The parts with Zuko were expected, especially from the last volume. I wish more time was spent with Zuko and Ozai. Zuko's mother was only mentioned once, which bothers me. Wasn't Zuko really distraught about this in the last volume?
SpoilerAlso, Mai leaving Zuko was not expected. However, having Suki (whom I thought was Sokka's girlfriend) be "really worried" about Zuko was disconcerting. There was no build-up for that. I was under the impression from the show and the last volume that the two weren't exactly "besties"... I hate to say, but seems like the two are destined to be romantically involved.

Story aside, the art was fantastic. I love the choice of using the team of GiruHiru. Their art style is a perfect fit for The Last Airbender.

(Fair warning to those who buy the volume. It has been read twice so far and I noticed the ink on the pages was wearing away. Normally Dark Horse is tops for quality, but lately that hasn't been the case. I would assume that the "eco-paper" that is being used is causing the pigment to wear away on hands and between pages.)
