My goodness, this story broke my heart. It is a testament to the struggle of women historically and introduced me to a new cultural viewpoint of the time. I look forward to reading the sequel as I just can't let Pearl's story end where it does. Very much enjoyed this read and would recommend it to readers who have an interest in history.

I think it deserves 3.5 stars. It ends abruptly. I understand there is a second book, but I wish it would stand alone well.

I did enjoy the character development and the growth of the cast.

Lisa See is able to make a wonderful story of commonplace events. Her books are lyrical, beautiful and moving. This story of two sisters and their lives was engrossing and touching and I'm glad that I read this.

This book was pretty good. Most of the time I was just sad about the horrible things that kept happening one after the other, but appreciated Pearl's perseverance and determination. That being said, I feel like the book really got going and then just ended abruptly. I am ok with ambiguous endings, but this feels like it just ended in the middle of the story. That knocked it down for me.
