Holy shit. Holy fucking shit!

First off, I need the next book. Now. Because you cannot leave me like that.

Vera Nazarian's writing drew me in with her first book and continued to draw me in in this next installment. Even though Gwen Qualified, she still has a lot of drama to go through. And man, is there DRAMA.

I don't even know how to give this a proper review right now since I just finished it. So it is possible I will be editing this over the next few days. My emotions are running so high. I was squealing and bouncing in my seat. That is how amazing this book is. I read at work since it's slow, and I would have to stop reading this book (even though I didn't want to) so that I wouldn't get so engrossed.

Goddam the characterization of these characters are phenomenal. I realize a few of them become more background characters as we continue to follow Gwen's journey, but that doesn't make them any less important. And they didn't just simply fade away. They were still constantly brought up and we got to continually see how they effect those around. And the new characters? Holy hell were they awesome!

I am so glad I bought this right after finishing Qualify. I honestly hate that I have to wait for the next installment to be published.

I’m glad I read the second book in the series.  The writing is more fluid and the story flows much better.

Already downloaded the third. I’m committed now.

I think my final conclusion is that this one's pretty close to So Bad It's Good (or maybe just Guilty Pleasure?). The awkwardness goes through the roof – so many scenes where I was just continually telling the book to stop. And most of the romance stuff was more hilarious than anything else. idk, it’s objectively not a high-quality book, but I’m enjoying it anyway for some reason?? So that’s something I guess. I do really think this could be an amazing story and series with significant editing and revisions, but as it is… it’s not great.

A lot of the problems with the last book are exacerbated here, so it seems like this one has even more need for extra editing. In Qualify, those issues were annoying but bearable; in Compete, I'm nearly at the point where I'm unwilling to forgive it. Gwen is even more special than last time, although she at least gets less "I shouldn't be telling you this but…" information. Aeson is even more mercurial, flipping between moods like there's some kind of switch involved.

In terms of other characters, I miss Dawn. Dawn was cool. Can she come back? Or can we at least have more Blayne? Most characters from the last book aren't mentioned 90+% of the time.

I love this book with all my heart - sure, there are some awkward parts, but the setting, the atomosphere, the emotions, and the drama are amazing.

This is my third read through of this book and it still makes me laugh and grin with delight. I love how I can now pick up on subtleties of their emotions having known about the end of this book and about the next book.

Basically this book is one drawn out romantic rollercoaster with space and spaceships and guns and dances. I honestly love coming back to this book <3

Gwen as usual was very hard headed through most of the book. Was stunned by the ending with CP
