To quote another review: “god what a miserable moping book about miserable people causing misery.“, except I loved it for those reasons.
Is it awful to say I get u Heathcliff. He’s so dramatic and vengeful and vindictive and just wanted to be loved.
F u Linton u miserable wingeing poo.
Did drag on a bit though, would’ve liked more Heathcliff and Cathy.

this was a very though read. I wished I'd liked it more but I really struggled to keep track of who is who. I was confused with the family tree. The story was creepy, haunting, weird.
just not my taste

THIS BOOK NEVER GETS OLD!

This is one of my top 5 favorite books of all time. This OG Gothic Romance has a touch of love, a lot of hatred, and just enough of a paranormal twist to make it a perfect October read.

10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND

Completely bonkers. The characters are utterly unlikeable and make the exact wrong choice at every turn. I think what made this so good to read is the fact that Heathcliff is the OG incel and has almost no redeeming qualities, but you nonetheless kind of root for him to destroy everyone who bullied him on the basis of his birth.

This is a novel that describes the incredible nuances between gender roles, social class, and (sort of) race relations in the Regency era— no simple feat, but somehow incredibly salient for the modern day.

I don’t not like this book. I certainly don’t get why it’s an epic love story though. I mean, it’s pretty messed up. Talk about toxic. The problems I have with this book are not anything to do with the fact that these are morally flawed characters or that I went in with different expectations or that I wanted a romance like many people with poor opinions of this novel say. It’s that I think it wasn’t exactly well-written and yet we find it a classic.
Sure, it’s got some great Gothic points. There’s some suspense, some creep, flawed characters when we’re used to everything being proper in these times. But it’s just lacking too much. We get told far too much instead of shown. I’m supposed to believe Heathcliff and Cathy were so madly in love, so epically entwined, that they are one soul, and inspire all this horror and yet there are no events to prove this to the reader. We’re just told it. I would have liked to see the development of so many emotions and yet it’s simply told every time. So that’s my problem with this book.
