A workmanlike debut with flashes of brilliance. I was hot and cold on this one—the great bits were stellar but my attention waned at times and it took me awhile to get through it. I think there is some serious potential here and once Wragg nails down his voice this series could really take off. A bit like John Gwynn in that respect. I’m looking forward to reading what comes next.

I liked this one, but didn't love it.
While I quite enjoyed most characters, it somehow lacked a little bit of depth to make it a personal favourite for me.
The easy prose, well done humour, action and interesting characters still made it a good read, and I don't regret investing the time, it just isn't one that will stick with me overly long.

This took me longer to get through than I expected. Not necessarily because it was bad, but the first few chapters really struggled to engage me. The titular Black Hawks are fun characters, but the protagonist and the other character that get dragged along by them are mostly ineffective and don’t have much agency. Sure, Chel chooses to stay with his sworn lord due to his oath, but not sticking around generally means death, so is hardly a dramatic choice.

3.5 ⭐️’s out of 5.

Nothing new, groundbreaking or genre defining but a good old romp filled with banter, humour, insults and more ‘F-bombs’ than you can shake a shitty stick at.

It’s a shortish book, suitable for when your looking for a good time and a break from something dark or epic.
