I love a good detective/cop story and this one includes a native/original people Canadian making her way in a crew of men on the force. I can’t wait to read the rest of them.

This is the first in a series I was unfamiliar with set in Canada. The first chapter regarding two young girls was a tough one to read and almost put me off the book. It quickly switches to modern day and a rather unpleasant man contemplating killing his wife. When he goes missing there are plenty of people who may have had a reason to wish him dead instead. Kala Stonechild, a young police officer with a past, is investigating along with a small team led by Jaques Rouleau. I enjoyed the dynamics of the investigative team. The storytelling was unusual as the chapters switched between about five different points of view.

I enjoyed the story, my library doesn’t have the second book available right now but I’m interested to see how the story continues. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it given it’s from the POV of a cop and ACAB. Overall I liked it though.

I enjoyed this book! I listened to the audiobook and o know I’ve seen some reviews based on the narrator’s monotonous recitation, and while that bothered me at first, I found it tolerable! I think she was going for suspense-building but perhaps fell short. An entertaining way to spend my commute!

A decent mystery set in Ottawa, with an indigenous heroine.

I quite liked the protagonist, Kala Stonechild, and her boss, Jacques Rouleau. The mystery was ok. There were some plot holes, but there are often plot holes, and they don't necessarily ruin the story. In this, I liked the competent character well enough that I might possible be interested in reading another book in this series.

Also, all the Canadian snowy weather descriptions made me cold.

The audiobook narrator could have been better, but I've listened to worse narrators.

I don't know that it will spark much discussion in my Mystery Book Club because it's a pretty straightforward story though.

3.5 stars rounded up to for, partly because it got me through casting on 583 sts on this shawl, as well as the first 9 rows that followed.

Enjoyable crime novel. Listened as an audiobook and there are too many characters introduced at the same time. It was hard to keep track of who is who as the main family under investigation is large and there are several policemen in the picture. Perhaps it would be easier when reading a book.
as I was mostly confused about who is who, I did not guess the murderer.
