Rating this book is a challenge. I almost DNF’d it several times. I often found myself thinking “should I even be reading this? What is the point of reading something so dark and graphic?” And I suppose in a way it forces you as a reader to grapple with the feelings of helpless, loss of innocence, and your own morality.

Well written book but incredibly dark. Not fun dark. It has a lot of realistic SA and child abuse. It got too graphic and depressing for me that I had to stop. Some people might enjoy that, but I felt like the book was written in bad taste.

I don't know why they author felt it necessary to give gross, vivid sexual detail about a fucking child but this is literally just his child porn fantasy novel. Disgusting.

Someone reviewed this book saying that it was short sentences.... I think they read a completely different book because I just had 3 sentences about a child's nipples while they're fucking torturing her. It's not brief, it's glorified.

This book has left me an empty husk of a human, wondering how the hell someone can do this to another person. Because I know the story is based off a real crime.
I cry for Meg, I cry for humanity. I cry for me a little bit.
This book made me need a hug.

Utterly heartbreaking

I picked up this book after researching the Sylvia Likens’ case and finding out this was based on it. I think this did a pretty good job fictionalising the case whilst still educating you on what happened.

Each scene was absolutely gripping and disturbing, but i think the thing that got me the most was that Meg’s younger sister Susan had to witness her sister’s abuse and was physically unable to do anything about it. She was there til the very end, even witnessing her death, and that just really broke my heart.
