72 hour marathon of gripping intrigues and investigations which kept me on the edge of the seat. The pairing of Arthur Conan Doyle, a master storyteller, and Stephen Fry, an irresistible interpreter of the whole series, is definitely a treasure for avid readers of detective stories.

It is hard to say goodbye! It has been a long, pleasant journey. Unite the writing skills of Conan Doyle and the suave, enchanting voice of Stephen Fry and you will find an audio book worth listening. For all the fans, but also people who, like me, only superficially knew these masterpieces.

Sherlock always has the answer, and I am always willing to suspend disbelief to follow his so-called "deductive method". Doyle presents a unique hero here - a brilliant, infallible, free-thinking gentleman, a depressed loner with a hankering for narcotics and the antagonist Moriarty at his heels. He only dims compared to the even more perfect Mycroft. Despite his cold manner, his ends/goals were always good. Don't we all sympathize with Dr. Watson who constantly visits to observe/emulate/chronicle Holmes's brilliance.

Undoubtedly the biggest book I've ever read (and perhaps I'll ever read). Regardless it was entertaining and I'm going to miss it, however I am overjoyed to finally finish it. Took me eight months. God, it was a great and incredibly long ride. There were great stories, there were parts I did not enjoy as much, there was everything. In the end I always looked forward to read a bit more and get amazed by Sherlock's brain.
Here's a theory:
After an observation I came to a conclusion that Sherlock Holmes IS GAY. Here's the process of my thought:
-Sir Conan Doyle could not afford to mention it in the times he wrote it. The book would be in no way published. The same sex orientation was frown upon back in those days and would Sir Arthur suggest anything of the sort, he'd be facing trouble. Therefore if Sherlock was gay, it would not be portrayed as such.
-Sherlock Holmes was always confident around women as Watson mentioned himself. I imagine that he would have absolutely no problem with speakig to women while there is no intention of impressing them in any way. There was no need to charm the female sex hence, he could have a pleasent conversation, while on the other hand (especially in those days) one should carefully consider the sort of language he uses around females. Or at least that is my opinion. Now this might not be the decisive reason for my theory, it certainly adds up.
-Mr. Holmes had never had a girlfriend or a wife. He got married in one of the stories, but it was solely for the purpose of solving the case he was working on. Sherlock never expressed any fondness or desire to any woman throughout entire book. And although the exact age of his retirement is not mentioned, I gather Sherlock was a man of his age. He was practising his detective work for 22 years, and it's not certain what he did before, or how long he did it for. He might not wanted a female companion for the detective purposes (as he touched this topic on few occasions), I find it difficult to believe that he would not find a partner in those long years Watson spent with him. Nor did he mention any previous ralationships.
-Lastly my biggest hunch is his friendship with Watson. He kept his friend quite close for a very long time. Yes, he could not say anything, but the best he could do was to keep him around, which he did really well. It appears to me that Watson was not so crucial in most cases, yet Sherlock insisted almost immediately after meeting each other to accompany him. Watson did get married soon enough, but that was inevitable on Sherlock's part. And while he did keep in touch with Watson very closely, there wasn't much confrontation between Sherlock and Watson's wife, indicating he did not care for her. Sherlock only wanted Watson for himself.
-You have to understand that back in the day the taboo of same sex orientation was taken in a very different light. People who were gay, could not express themselves. In fact any sort of approval would not be tolerated in the society.
After all, it's all just a crazy theory. But maybe you'll find some more refrences if you'll read this book with this in mind. You never know.

What is better than revisiting Sherlock Holmes? Classic literature at its best here with the first of the series. I had not read this in quite some time and thought since I downloaded the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle I would start from the beginning. It may be a long time coming but eventually I will be done and it will be worth it. Everyone knows who Sherlock Holmes is but not many have actually read his exploits. A Study in Scarlet is as intriguing and mysterious as it was all those many years ago when I originally read it and I could not wait to find out what the outcome would be. From the streets of London to the wilds of America this is a great read.
