I think I've read all of Pat Conroy's books, and I have to say some are better than others. I love his lyrical writing style, but it's obviously not for everyone. However, with Prince of Tides, and also with Beach Music, Pat Conroy writes dysfunctional families, sharp dialogue high drama. I loved Prince of Tides and I went on to love Beach Music almost as much, if not more. I'm a sucker for beautiful writing, and in The Prince of Tides, Pat Conroy was at his best.

5/5. Eloquently written with witty humor. A sad journey from childhood through adulthood that reminds us of the lasting impacts that our traumas have on us and those we care about. A perfect example of the stigma’s that still exist around men expressing/hiding their feelings, humor as a coping skill, the walls that we create to distance ourselves from the things that hurt us, and hope for the ability to work through our struggles to find a better tomorrow.

The first Pat Conroy book I read. The language is exquisite.

There is some really solid storytelling here. Unfortunately there is also a lot of ick that I just couldn’t fully get past. 2.5 stars

Beautiful prose, but some plot lines that were not adequately wrapped up for me and some areas of inconsistency.
