So, out of all the Stephen King books I've read (now a total of 3, including this one), this is the first one I've liked. Of course, this is one of his classic and most well known books. I haven't seen the movie (although I've heard it's great), but this book was really good. It was tense, had good characters, and I found the situation more believable than his other works. I also enjoyed the callback to The Shining. I recognized some of the towns that are named, and the reason why is they were also mentioned in The Shining.

So, I hear you asking, why isn't this 5 stars? For one, I really don't like the use of the word rape in this novel. I know at the time it was written this word was okay to use, but apart from one scene, it really didn't need to be used. As the saying goes, if you can use anything other than rape, don't use rape.

I simply wasn't enjoying this. I tried to give it a good attempt, but I found myself avoiding reading completely because I didn't want to read it. Within the first couple of chapters, King feels the need to state that none of Annie's orifices are sexually appealing and that she's curvy but only in the bust. It was a truly disgusting paragraph to read and fully fit the stereotype of "men writing women," and I found it so unnecessary to both the story and her character. From the description, I thought this would be much more of a psychological thriller, which I was really excited about, but it is very much focused on body horrors and physical abuses instead. From the reviews I've read, there may be more psychological aspects later, but I don't care to get there.

Tense, creepy and engrossing from the first page to the last - plus one of the best villains there is.
I particularly loved the ending and how King showed the psychological damage and paranoia which Annie instilled in Paul over their time together. Some of the parts made me squeal out loud! Amazingly vivid body horror and horrific psychological torture so well written it feels real.
One that’ll stay with me.

I was very underwhelmed by this book. Its a good book but I think that I expected more from it. My mom was hyping this book up a lot so that might be affecting my thoughts but... meh.
