This book did NOT go as expected. Enjoyable ready, love the flashbacks. Curious about how some parts are supposed to really fit together, but love a great surprise plot twist!

This would get 5 stars alone due to the fact that Weiner got her publishers to release this book *early* during COVID madness, knowing that people need books, whereas so many other book release dates have been delayed. But separately, this book was just exactly a wonderful escape while being smart, sharp, on-point and mysterious. Weiner writing a mystery with the back scope of social media, YES PLEASE. Also, I love how she went back to having the main characters being in their 20s, because I fell in love with Weiner in my 20s, when she was writing about women in their 20s, and I have aged with her heroines, and seeing her hit the 20s again, this time you could tell with the benefit of knowledge and wisdom makes it so lovely and nuanced.

Definitely read this, and read it this summer. Oh--and listen to the interview with Weiner on the "What Should I Read Next" podcast as well.

This book cant pick. Is it a fun chick lit story about revenge, frenemies and cute boys or is it a murder mystery ? Is everyone a liar or is everyone just innocent and broken ? Is social media good and real or is everyone faking it because the real world sucks ? Please I just wanted a funny summer read with casualties of cheating and ruined wedding not a half assed mystery.
Also, Daphne and Nick, kind of unnecessary, they didn't really have chemistry.

this book is definitely NOT what i was expecting (although tbh i had very little idea of what the book was since i only picked it up bc it was a goodreads choice award nominee).

things i enjoyed:
-the representation of a NORMAL BODIED romantic female lead (could have been improved by eliminating the severe impact of fatphobic content on the character’s choices though, but maybe that’s just a me thing)
-the murder (lol)

things i didn’t enjoy:
-the romance (way too rushed, nothing about the characters clicked for me)
-the grudges (nobody likes who they were in high school, so why don’t we all just collectively repress it and get over it?)
-the rich man having multiple affairs and secret children (ugh so trite)

things i hated:
-the influencer lifestyle (just no)

so yeah three stars (mostly for the murder lol)

WOW HOW MANY PARENTHESES DID I USE IN THIS REVIEW

I enjoyed the beachy feel of this summer novel set on Cape Cod. I enjoyed Daphne but the plot, especially as the mystery unfolded, did not feel as organic as I would have liked it to be. This was reminiscent of The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand, so if you loved that then definitely read this!

Jennifer Weiner does is again. I loved this book. It has mystery, romance, friendship, and so much more. It was the perfect book while quarantined at home.

There’s a big surprise plot twist about a third of the way through and I was HERE. FOR. IT. I also loved the rich sense of place at the beach. It made me want to visit Cape Cod.
