Very thrilling and mysterious! As much as I hate the ending for the characters, it was really good!

Nine students. Three blood sports. One deadly weekend.

Greer MacDonald is an ostracized scholarship student of the very prestigious S.T.A.G.S. private school. Very few people, if anyone will treat her kindly. But then one day she gets invited by the schools most popular and elite group of students for a weekend of huntin', shootin', and fishin'.

From the beginning of the book, before you know anything, you know Greer is guilty of manslaughter. And with the premise of this book it wasn't much of a stretch for me to guess who the victim was at the end. However, the story was so much more than who died at the end and I kept reading.

If you like stories of elite secret societies and cults, and if you like a YA thriller, this was a really good one. I loved it.

Themes of racism, classism, and discourse over modern technology vs archaic communication and lifestyle.

Content has hunting/animal gore, and thriller fear/suspense.

If you’re a fan of Pretty Little Liars, Karen McManus’ One Of Us Is Lying, or the film Cry_Wolf, you’ll like this novel.

STAGS focuses on Greer, a female student from Manchester who wins a scholarship to study at the prestigious St Aiden the Great School (STAGS for short). She doesn’t fit in and nobody talks to her, much less the six snooty old money prefects who run the school, dubbed “The Medievals”.

Greer and two fellow misfits are invited on a weekend away to a Medievals’ family estate, for a weekend of “huntin’, shootin’, and fishin’. And considering the book opens with Greer proclaiming she’s a murderer, it’s unsurprising that it’s not long before things start to go south on the family estate.

This is suuuuuuch a fun teen thriller read! It hit all my boarding school feels, all my Pretty Little Liars and Cry_Wolf feels, and is overall just a delightfully suspenseful read for a rainy evening when you want something mysterious and a little bit trashy.

My only qualms were that Greer was overly naive in parts, and the resolution and twist at the end were both a little rushed. I think the story could’ve benefited from an extra 40 pages to add a bit more meat on the bones - instead, it felt like we were hurtling toward a skeletal conclusion at the speed of sound.

Overall: This is a quick, fun, trashy teen thriller that will appeal to anybody who enjoys Pretty Little Liars or boarding school stories. It’s not gonna win a Nobel Prize for literature anytime soon, but it was a helluva fun read on a stormy evening when I was stuck at home!
