I've always liked Bardugo's work. While this book critique's the Elites of the world, I think I would have been more satisfied with a harsher critique. However, it is part of a duology, so perhaps the sequel will give me what I want. It is another world full of magic like her Shadow and Bone series but darker, and more dangerous. I enjoyed it, but something was missing. Like I said, maybe the "evil" guys didn't get the comeuppance I wanted, I also was disappointed by the lack of diversity. I mean, it's kind of there, but not like Six of Crows, not enough? I can't explain it well, but it didn't satisfy the way Six of Crows did. It didn't feel natural, felt forced. Like checking off a list. I also think it took a long time for it to pick up in plot, chapter 6 - page 95. However, I think it was a good book. It had a good "dark academia" setting and an interesting system.

I think anyone who wants to read this should definitely check the trigger warnings for this book because it shocked me with how intense it is in comparison to Bardugo’s other stuff (understandably as this is an adult novel and not YA). However, it’s a very well written book that pulled me out of a reading slump and kept me on the edge of my seat. If you like mystery and the macabre, this is just the thing for you!

If you start reading this book and you struggle to understand everything withing the first three chapters, I get it. Stick to it, it's worth it. Eventually, there will be more magic; eventually, you will find out more about all the dropped names and societies; eventually you'll get used to the jumping in times and characters. It takes a while to really get into it, but it's absolutely worth it! I think you'll get to like everyone, including Alex. Brilliant work. What I love most about it, is that the magic in this book is believable. I think if magic was a real thing, all the stuff they did in the book and all the problems connected to it would absolutely happen.
