wanted to do a quick reread before finally reading hell bent. imo, of the recently released dark academia novels, this is one of the best. bardugo creates an interesting world with a compelling plot. i also think the way the plot & the intricacies of the novel unfold comes across very naturally, just the right amount of letting people be confused before slowly unveiling the mysteries & magic system etc.

none of the characters in her stories have held up to the cast of six of crows, but that is a high (and gay) bar to meet, so it's understandable.

this book discusses sexual assault/rape. it is not described in graphic detail, but it is briefly described and comes up multiple times throughout the novel, so i would keep that in mind if the topic is a trigger.

So many books that take me a while to get into I cannot get myself to give them a five star rating. But I can't bear to downgrade ninth house for my own mood when I started reading.

Alex and Darlington are such amazing characters and I am enthralled by this seedy, magical vision of New Haven. I loved pretty much everything about this book and I was expecting to find it super offensive after a fee reviews I saw tbh.

Had to immediately move on to Hellbent!

A modern fantasy thriller where magic is real and secret societies at an Ivy League school delve it out to the rich and powerful. You follow the flawed main character during her freshman year working for the society who serve as a kind of magic police department to keep the other societies in check. A person disappears, someone is murdered, there’s twist and turns. There is some dark stuff in here. If SA is triggering for you, don’t read this. Looking forward to the sequel.
