This book made food in the US make so much sense. The list of ingredients on those packages always makes me feel like I need a refresher in my high school chemistry class.

This book also seems to sum up capitalism in its finest US form: profit at any cost. It was nice to know a couple of the execs and scientists came to their mortal senses, but really, if you won’t eat it or feed your family this food you are selling, why should I?

Food always feels and tastes better for me overseas. The skin on fruits and vegetables feels thinner, and they actually have flavor (a lot of the fruit in Houston tastes like crunchy water). Meals, when I’m traveling, taste more savory, and they sit lighter in my stomach. I actually get hungry on a more regular basis. In the US, if I eat packaged food or go out, I stay full for a long time. It’s partially why I workout as much as I do.

Of course very few countries are completely free of the food imperialism. All the fast food companies, Starbucks, restaurant chains - they are all making their way outside the US. I recall when McDonald’s and KFC were introduced in Tokyo, and the last time I was in a fairly remote suburb in India, we ate at a Chili’s, a Subway, a Burger King, and a Dominos. Our food dominance is going to result in a global obesity pandemic. Even during the few short years I lived in Tokyo, children went from looking normal weights to being clearly overweight. Faster is often the wrong answer.

Stay healthy out there folks!
