With colorful illustrations and easy-to-understand text, this little book very easily makes way for children, teens, and adults to all grasp a better understanding of gender dysphoria and self expression. A teaching tool alongside a relatable story this is worthy of a lot of praise.

Wow! This book is so important for future generations. It’s so important to adults too. It does a wonderful job addressing the parts of someone they may not understand! I hope that everyone reads this to their kids, whether they are part of the community or not!

As a nonbinary person, this is the type of book I had in my life as a kid! Having someone to understand the monster that loomed over me would've been life changing. This book will be so life changing for trans kids!

Many thanks to Netgalley, Jessica Kingsley Publishers and the author for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This gorgeously illustrated book is both moving and educational. Me and My Dysphoria Monster is a perfect little gem of a book to use as a tool to explain to young children the concepts of assigned sex, gender and gender dysphoria. It give us the story of little Nisha getting rid of her gender dysphoria monster which is beautifully illustrated and explained in simple terms. The most beautiful part of the tiny story is where Nisha meets an adult who has a dysphoria monster for themselves, which helps her to come out and understand herself better as now she has more words and tools. This little story proves how much representation and right words are important for children growing up. At the end of the book there is a small handy glossary of gender related terms and FAQs to help answer any questions the little ones will come up with once they have listened to the story.

With world spewing hate around us every single day, little rays of sunshine like these books that will help get the new generations through it is very important!!

A sweet, heartwarming story of gender identity that shows how being true to yourself is absolutely wonderful. It also shows the importance of having positive family support as a child figures out their identity. The art is lovely and there is a great resource guide for adults at the end. Would recommend for any family with little kids!

Me and My Dysphoria Monster is a beautiful story about Nisha, a young girl whose life is plagued by a monster that we come to learn is her gender dysphoria monster. It grows bigger and bigger when teachers and others misgender her, and really gets in the way of her making friends and doing the things she wants to do. It isn’t until Nisha meets another trans person, and starts to be affirmed in her identity, that she takes control back from the monster and lives the life she deserves.

As a psychologist who specializes in working with queer young people and their families, I know how difficult it can be to explain gender dysphoria to people young and old. This book does a lovely job of teaching children and their families about what its like to have your identity invalidated daily, and how powerful it is to affirm someone’s identity. I think the book does a great job of introducing pronouns to kids, and there’s a helpful guide for adults at the end to help them explain different concepts.

This book would be a great addition to any child’s collection — check it out and let me know what you think!

Out August 18!

Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC!

Some of the best representation of a transgender child I've seen to date.

I'm always keeping an eye out for new books with a transgender main character, especially books that actually explain what being transgender is or feels like. I've read a lot of them, and whilst every bit of representation is important, some are better than others. There is a fine line with these picturebooks between informative and patronising, and some tend to lean too far into the latter. This however, does not.

This is definitely one of the books I will be recommending from now on. The art is beautiful, and the way that Nisha slowly begins to look more like herself is a beautiful visual for children, without valuing specific gender stereotyping. Everyone is accepting of Nisha (there is no transphobia in this book!) and the fact that the term Gender Dysphoria is used as all is bonus points in my book.

This is a great step and very exciting to see.
