I love Amelia! The characters are great, the writing is fantastic, the plot is predictable. Or maybe I'm just that good at guessing the solution to the mystery. No, it's predictable.

It took a while to get going, but it turned into quite a fun read.

fun read but definitely seems of its time with how they wrote about non-british people

Oh, this book was just so fun! I got talked into reading it after Bookshelves of Doom did an entire week devoted to the blogger's love of Elizabeth Peters. I don't read mysteries very often, and I'd never thought to try Elizabeth Peters even though she was always on the shelf right next to Ellis Peters, author of the Cadfael mysteries. I wish I'd tried it sooner.
I was really struck by how much Amelia Peabody shares with Alexia Tarabotti from the Parasol Protectorate books. I have to wonder if Gail Carriger has read this series. I'm not suggesting anything negative, here... certainly the Parasol Protectorate series stands apart. But the two characters do share many basic characteristics - even a penchant for carrying around a deadly parasol.
The characters are fun and endearing, the time period/setting is fascinating, and the mystery brought in just enough intrigue and peril that it kept me up at night to read more. I will happily move on to book two!
