Eva Peron arrived from nowhere, an illegitimate daughter come B-part actress, to become the most powerful and loved woman to grace Argentinian history. A heroine for the working class, her life was cut short by cancer at the desperately young age of 33. Her husband, likely against her wishes, commissioned a famous enbalmer to preserve her body, and it lay almost in state until he lost power a couple of years later. A bizarre tale follows of the power of Evita as a symbol, the replicas and the travelling plans of the corpse, and the obsession that grew in the men who took charge of her in death.
It's a fantastic subject matter, but a rather slow paced book that meant it was a little to easy to put down. I learnt a ton of history I'd not known before, but at the same time, it wasn't the most exciting ride.

A fascinating melange of fiction, reportage and historical documentation (and some magical realism). A stylish book, with great writing.

Too slow of pace for me to really get hooked into. Also requires a decent amount of background knowledge about the political history.

Kind of a creepy book, but given its topic--the bizarre journeys of the heavily embalmed corpse of Eva Peron--I guess that's not unexpected. Theoretically much of what Martinez has written actually happened, which makes it even creepier.
