The book begins by showing us some of the hard work and long hours that farmers put in when the autumn equinox sets in. It then shifts to a more fanciful tale of the Leaf People and their equinox celebration under the golden-orange light of the Harvest Moon. Ziefert balances the festivities of the holiday/event with the long-standing cultural significance that the autumn equinox has held across much of (at least) Europe and North America (Note to self: research the autumn equinox in other parts of the world!)
I enjoyed the pacing of this book, the festivities described, and the balance that Ziefert brought to the book. The art is gorgeous and I will most certainly be looking for more of Mark Jones' work. By the Light of the Harvest Moon is going to be one of the first books I buy for my children. It captures the spirit of autumn and the equinox perfectly, while gently reminding us of the historic and cultural reason behind the holidays at this time.

A great story that illustrates the magic of the Autumnal Equinox. Would be good for a elementary age read aloud.
