Captures the small southern town very well. Unfortunately this means that at times it was rather corny, and occasionally boring. The romance between Gideon and Anna Kate wasn't really believable nor was it enjoyable. Same with Cam and Natalie. I wish that the romance would have just been done away with to focus more heavily on the magical realism, because when the story was focused on that, it was wonderful. The concept of the Callows and their long lineage of healing, with herbal remedies and a touch of true magic, was super intriguing.

P.S, Faylene reminded me of a much nicer Maxine Fortenberry from True Blood.

This has been on my list now for quiet some time. I am always a sucker for a good southern themed story and this one did not disappoint. The story has some great themes including elements of magical realism, family drama, southern culture, and death/grieving. I really enjoyed our main characters and the easy flow of the writing. This one is definitely a winner.

I loved the beautiful setting descriptions in this book that make you feel like you’re really there. The audiobook narrators did an excellent job with the voices and accents. Cozy small town feel with lovable characters and a bit of mystery.

I really enjoyed Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe. Set in a small town where everyone knows everyone else and their business, it’s a story of family and staying close to your roots. There’s a lot of whimsy in this book but it’s done in a way that isn’t fantastical. It’s a message more along the lines of departed ones always being with you vs. something truly magical. I did get a little mixed up with the accidents that occurred in the past but it may be because I read 10 pages at a time throughout the day instead of bigger chunks. Very likeable, memorable characters with a mystery tone.

This was a heart warming read about a young girl from a line of magical women who inherits her Aunts cafe which makes a magic pie the local residents go crazy for... there is also a cat who seems to help her, she must find out about her past and in the process make some hard decisions to find herself and what she really wants in life. For me it wasn't as magical as I had hoped for.....
