The Apprentice is definitely an extension or sequel of The Surgeon, with a little more focus on character development for Rizzoli than in the Surgeon. I was somewhat bored with the Surgeon/Apprentice story line, but digging deeper into Rizzoli’s character made the book worth it for me. She’s nuanced, she’s annoying, she’s dogged. She’s fallible and, even though I would say we have very, very little in common, she’s relatable. I appreciated the Apprentice for what I think it’s going to be – backstory and development for the rest of the series. The mystery itself wasn’t too bad, just looking forward to something different after the Surgeon and the Apprentice.
