I received this book as an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited by the description of the book and I wanted to love this, but had a really difficult time getting into it. I gave it a really honest try to finish, but ended up DNFing at 66%.
The overall storyline was really cool and interesting to me. It felt like a mix of fantasy and dystopian. It’s not at all like Fourth Wing, but I got similar vibes with the way the training and squads were set up. It was really cool to have illustrations throughout the book! I’ll be the first to admit that a book doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece for me to enjoy it! However, for this book I think the characters and world building needed a lot more refinement and development. The writing was choppy in my opinion and I left each chapter feeling really confused by what was going on and how it related to the overall plot.
Unfortunately I just didn’t feel that invested in any of the characters. The relationships and dialogues between the characters felt unnatural and forced to me.
Overall, cool idea for a story, just didn’t work for me.
