I don't read true crime. It's not something that interests me. But a few months ago, I asked my true crime loving coworker for a recommendation. Her first suggestion was "The Devil in the White City", which I enjoyed. When this book was selected as the next read for my discussion group, I went in without much hope. However, this book was quite good. Drawn from archival records, Dr. Cream is brought to life, starting with his release from prison, his travel to Lambeth, and his arrest for poisoning a few prostitutes in London.
Then, the story abruptly goes back to his childhood, following him as he grew up, went to school, went to medical school, went to Scotland, and eventually started poisoning people. It was very well written, with a lot of emphasis on the legwork of the case, and not on Dr. Cream himself or on the gruesomeness of his crimes.
