Like the other books that I've read by Arthur C. Clarke, it is "out there" at times, but unlike 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Odyssey Two, I was able to follow along and enjoy the story that it was trying to tell.
I read the two previous works when I was REALLY young, being a lover of Science Fiction as a child. It may be, for me, that it didn't resonate...because I don't visualize while reading. OR it may mean that I am not into trippy Science Fiction, and would rather read character based stories. To each, their own.
I hadn't realized that this was part of a series. I'm interested in possibly continuing on this adventure...though it may be Space Opera September 2024...before I do so.
About this story...it is a plot driven story and uses a lot of interesting assumptions as it tries to explain what is happening on and around Rama. I also enjoyed the characters (as much as they were given), but only wish the overall story was more balanced, or even slid towards a character driven story. Oh, well.
I think that it depicts humanity as it is, for the good and the bad. We are consumate explorers, but we also are extremely risk averse, too.
I'm glad that I finally picked up this story and consumed it.

Rama as a concept was super interesting and perhaps the engima of it is the whole point, but I felt a bit underwhelmed by the ending and saw it as anticlimactic.

this was really cleverly done. a massive structure / space ship is detected by astronomers in 2131, its trajectory indicates it is not on a long orbit around the sun, but is an interstellar object, solar survey Endeavour is sent to check it out. This is really something very new and interesting, something I've not really read since I read Foundation, it feels a little like in that ballpark but I did enjoy it more than Foundation I think. I feel like this is something I would need to read again to appreciate more. Like a friend said to me, this feels more like a space documentry and I really get where he's coming from.
