Tentacle and other word for cat word count: 400 (I wish I was joking)

Do you like tentacles?

Do you like monsters? Too bad turns out this monster romance isn’t a monster romance and he in fact just a man who happens to have tentacles. I was thoroughly unimpressed at this revelation.

But, do you like being entangled by tentacles by a man from a shadow dimension?

Well, do I have the book for you!

I wanna start by getting the only good parts of this book out of the way before I get into the rest of this review, which probably demonstrates my current mental well-being. Especially, since this is my second Shiggy Shade book and this only gets 2 stars because it had lore which I discovered is my new favourite book trope when romance books have deep lore.

Tentacle Entanglement, weirdly enough, is far better than Stalked by the Boogieman which honestly isn’t that big of an achievement. This book while strange and horrifying at points is actually decent, I laughed, nearly cried, and was thoroughly confused. Shiggy Shade is hilarious and I don’t know if they mean to be (which is terrifying to think) if you’re looking for a laugh definitely recommend you read this book.

The main character…Alexis? is fairly good even if I don't remember her name and I didn’t absolutely despise the main love interest who I believe is called Mate? I don’t think he actually has a name, to be honest. The lore around the tentacle monsters is pretty good but I like the concept of worldbuilding in these kind of books it is always hilarious that there is established lore. Mate is at points weirdly sweet? Like he once tucked her into bed and patted her on the head so you know take that as you will.

Overall, this book is decent and honestly hilarious I think when you compare a short book like this to Shiggy Shade’s longer work like Stalked by the Boogieman you can tell that the author is good at writing shorter works. Honestly, good for Shiggy Shade and while Stalked by the Boogieman left me feeling hatred, this book has made me appreciate Shiggy Shade more I think going in expecting to be entertained by the comedy works best.

Now let’s begin with the cons of this work spoilers will be used so perhaps don’t read if you are interested in this work. As usual I recommend reading Shiggy’s works first because nothing is better than going in blind.

Spoilers:

First and foremost I wanna say I was disappointed that the tentacle monster turned out to legit be a man. I was upset and annoyed that this tentacle monster was not an Eldritch horror like I thought he would be, honestly he became less appealing after that. This tentacle man, who I think is only referred to as Mate in this book is not a bad love interest, but when you compare him to the guy in Stalked by the Boogieman it really isn’t that hard to be a good or decent love interest. The guy has a split personality in the start where in the dark he is a sweetheart who genuinely cares about the wellbeing and well pleasure of the MC, but in the light he is mean and in general a sadistic man who likes to inflict pain more than pleasure and enjoys eating her tears? It was weird ok. However, it is revealed in the lore he needs to eat people’s fear in order to stay on Earth and if he wants to properly stay because he cannot return to the shadow dimension after absorbing too much fear on Earth he needs to eat a person. Yet, in eating the person he basically uses them as a walking skin suit that he slowly adjusts to suit his mate or so he looks more like himself.

At this point, you might be wondering who does he eat? Well if you were expecting the Alexis’s boss at her cafe who is, in general, a creep you’d be correct! He eats her boss after it is discovered that he has been selling her paintings to a gallery for a lot of money and only giving her the bare minimum, then he proceeds to wear his skin to take over the cafe and create a thriving cafe business. I want to mention that because he’s essentially an octopus shadow monster his mouth at this point is revealed to be in his stomach…it was a choice. Yet, after he devours the boss in his stomach mouth thing he becomes a full human in a sense he still has his tentacles but they are invisible unless he reveals them to the Alexis but he no longer has his octopus shadow form. True to Shiggy Shade tropes he does have two fun time toys one is well human and the other well is described as being his mating arm like an octopus. The tentacles were then when he revealed them were described as flesh-coloured which grossed me out.

Also at the beginning there is a moment where he gives her a foot massage because apparently “-“Human females have almost as many nerve endings on the soles of their feet as they have between their legs,” (page 64). Yeah it was weird and uncomfortable to experience.

Another trope that I’m discovering is common is pregnancy and in this book at the end Mate breeds (yes they use the word breed multiple times) with Alexis and due to Umbra (his species) genetics or something he is able to using what is known as a…spermatophore allows her to become pregnant with triplets. After this there is a 5 year time skip and in the epilogue everyone gets a happy ending…except her boss who was eaten.

Speaking of the lore, boy is it good! So, the octopus shadow monster is a part of a race of shapeshifters called the Umbra and his dimension due to global warming happening over there is completely destroyed and unlivable for anyone outside of that dimension. Shiggy Shade is letting everyone know global warming is bad and I appreciate the environmentalism in this book. Now the Umbra have soulmates and when a few before the events of this book travelled to Earth they created a youtube video that when the Umbra’s soulmate listens to it attracts the Umbra to them. Huzzah?

Overall, this book was decent and I didn’t actively despise it. I honestly think Shiggy Shade writes pretty good short works which is probably why I enjoyed it more than Stalked by the Boogieman.
