This is hereby one of the most bizarre things I have ever had the privilege of reading. Mild spoilers from here on in: Featuring a giant robot who just walked out of the ocean one day, a giant demon space bat, and an utterly beautiful writing style, you will have never read anything like it.

I needed a book to tide my class over for a week until we were ready to continue the book we're looking at in English, so I picked up The Iron Giant, a short story with only 5 chapters.

I had vague recollections of this being a book that was read to me in class when I was a child but could remember very little about it. As I read it to the class, it all came back!

I remembered the mystery and intrigue surrounding the Iron Man and where he came from (something that is never answered).

The prose is really unique in the way that it uses repetition and the ridiculousness of the last couple of chapters is great comedy.

Also, this edition that I own is a beautiful, illustrated hardback so bonus points for that.

The only reason I have given it 4 stars is that it is so short so it doesn't give you much of a story - it just doesn't have the time to do so.

Heartfelt, whimsical, and deceivingly simple, The Iron Man earns its praise as one of "the greatest of modern fairy tales." Being a huge fan of The Iron Giant, which was inspired by this story, I'm glad to have finally gotten around to it.

The pacing is great, and is top tier bedtime story pace. From what I understand, this is a story that Hughes created to help his children cope with the suicide of their mother/his wife, Sylvia Plath. While the real-life story of Plath's death and the factors surrounding it, including the role Hughes himself played in it, is certainly grave and complex, with it in mind, the story of the Iron Man becomes that much more tender.

The re-read value on this one is high, and is one I hope to one day read to my own children so that they might also be better equipped and prepared to brave the dragons in their lives.
