This book does not take itself seriously and neither should you! It's definitely entertaining, while still keeping you on your toes with the mystery they're solving. A perfect palate cleanser.

I read 36% but it took me three days to get there. There is a lot of noise in this book... side conversations... stupid humor that has nothing to do with the story. If the author had reduced the attempts at humor and just stuck to the story then the book would have been a better read. It’s too distracting and makes for a difficult read that I just don’t normally encounter.

I need more background information, even a little but! We are dropped into this story not knowing what is happening and the writing was not good. It was choppy and trying to be funny, but tha  made it worse because it did not flow well.

It felt like a tamer Shelly Laurenston. I liked it but I did think it was a little long. I feel like it could have been snappier.

I finished this book under the wire right before the library was going to take it back from me. I had less and an hour before it returned when I finished.

I'm not gonna lie, I liked this a lot more than I was expecting to. I figured this would just be a shifter romance to change up genres for a moment, but it was a good time and addressed some serious issues in a banter-y way.

The heroine is a bear shifter who is always thinking about eating, violent toward alarm clocks, and has a secret crush on the hero that her coworkers tease her about--hardcore relatable. The hero is also a bear shifter with a MASSIVE sweet tooth who puts syrup in coffee and only eats red candy and keeps stashes in his car who also has a crush on the heroine. He also spends a lot of the plot just along for the ride and willing to help the heroine however she needs instead of taking over, which I appreciated.

I thought Davidson handled bear behaviors in human form adorably well. And I will say this, though the attraction to each other was a source of miscommunication for most of the book it was not the annoying kind. It was coworkers teasing heroine about crush in front of hero--she denies HARD and blushes--as one does when such things happen. Hero takes that as truth but also puts denies his crush when confronted with it--as one does. But they are also kind of putting out feelers for each other at the same time. So, all in all, I felt the "miscommunication" was legitimate and handled well.

The banter was so, so fast paced almost to the detriment of the keeping track of the dialogue at times. For the most part it was really clever and funny and broke up the much darker premise of what they are investigating--but every once and awhile it was like...I get it...we're all funny and quirky, but maybe can we talk normally for a moment?

Overall, I will probably keep reading the series because this was a nice balance of cute and serious.

Rachel, the sexy times in this book were extremely minimal and only happened at the VERY end, in case you were wondering. If you ever wanted to read werebears, this one is probably your best fit.

I was in the mood for shifters and grabbed this at random from the library. Rounding up a full star because of the thing that happens after my SPOILERS tag below!

Yay:
-the spoiler below
-that the series is called BeWere
-my fave kind of beta hero
-lady bear shifter! The dream!
-random NB/genderfluid character just kind of popping up
-lots of different types of animal shifters

Nay / uhhhhhh:
-the will-they-won't-they miscommunication was just too long and belabored. Not super believable for me as stakes in the way.
-the light/funny tone was a weird mismatch with the pretty intense abuse storyline.
-the banter and pace was a little bit much sometimes, if not quite as Gilmore Girls-meets-Pulp Fiction as the later Shelly Laurenston badger series (loved the first, couldn't get through the others).

TL;Dr: will prob read more!

So the plot of this book is centered around were-child trafficking, which is a very serious topic - but outside of that, this book is very silly (the audiobook narration may or may not have contributed to this impression, idk). Everyone is very dramatic and over the top in a way that, while not terribly realistic, is amusing and pretty endearing. It was absolutely enjoyable, but personally I’d prefer something a bit more serious with more world building.

(I don’t think I’ll continue the series and will stick with my teen wolf fanfic tbh)
