often criticized for being too european-focused. i will excuse this given the author is european. however i will instead criticize it for being too military-focused. boring as hell if u don’t care about the roman empire

calling it a history of the world is the mistake, it's really a history of europe. but it's charming and cute. definitely would be good for a little kid!

Lovely, lovely read. Written by a person who not only loves history and is fascinated by it, but equally finds inspiration in the progress and potential of man. Some wording around the 1700s rubs me the wrong way but its a product of its time so I give it the benefit of the doubt. I only wanted to read someone's attempt at a brief summary of the history of the world, and I have come away with both that and a rejuvenated love for humanity, an awe for all of man's progress, and a replenished hope for the future.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time now but finally decided to pick it up and OMG IT’S ACTUALLY SOOO ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE. I love how everything is told like a story and how concise the book is. Even though it’s packed with information (as it should be), it was still delivered in a fun way and I found myself getting excited to know more about history. Highly recommend this!

It feels like your grandfather is telling you a story and calls it the history of the world.
Thank you, E.H. Gombrich.
